Join violist and composer Xanthe Bartholomaeus, accompanied by pianist Mel Wei Lim, for an evocative hour-long recital tracing the evolution of the viola as a solo instrument.
The program begins with Carl Stamitz’s virtuosic Viola Concerto in D major, a work that inspired Mozart himself, and continues with Bohuslav Martinů’s Rhapsody-Concerto—a post-WWII masterpiece blending Moravian folk music with the energy of 1950s New York.
The recital concludes with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro (arr. for viola), a piece championed by pioneering violists William Primrose and Lionel Tertis in their quest to elevate the viola to solo status.
Experience the rich, expressive voice of the viola through centuries of music that helped shape its place on the concert stage.
